La noche del 28 de julio de 2025, vecinos de Umm al-Kheir intentaron bloquear una excavadora llevada por el equipo del colono Yinon Levi, temiendo que cortara la conducción de agua del pueblo; Levi disparó una pistola y el activista y profesor de inglés Awdah Hathaleen, de 31 años, recibió un disparo en el pecho a unos 40 metros y murió. B'Tselem publicó un vídeo que, según dice, grabó el propio Hathaleen, en el que Levi dispara hacia la cámara. Levi fue detenido, pasó a arresto domiciliario al día siguiente y después un tribunal lo liberó de ese arresto alegando falta de pruebas.
